General Surgery

At Flushing Animal Hospital, we strive to provide a safe, sterile, and friendly environment for your furry friend while they are here for surgery. We, as pet lovers, know how nervous it can make you to think about surgery for your friend, and we do not treat it lightly. Thus, we'd like to take a minute to explain to you what your pet will experience while they're here with us, and hopefully ease your mind.

After you drop your pet off in the morning, your dog or cat will have their preanesthetic blood work done. They will have their blood drawn soon after arriving so that any abnormalities are noted and addressed before they receive any preanesthetic medications.
If their labwork is normal, they will receive an injection of a tranquilizer, which helps to protect their heart and relaxes your pet while they are here waiting for surgery (between 12 and 3). They may also receive preoperative pain medication or antibiotics, if indicated. Your pet will be given an injectable anesthetic before being put on gas anesthetic. This is to reduce the amount of stress on your pet's heart. It will also help to give your pet a smoother recovery. Your pet will be maintained on gas anesthetic for the remainder of the surgery (typically 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the procedure). While your pet is under anesthesia, a Technician or Assistant will monitor them closely with the assistanse of our monitoring equipement (ekg, SPO2, BP, and Thermometer) until they have fully recovered.

Although we do many types of surgeries ranging from tumor and wart removals to amputations and emergency surgery, it is very difficult to list prices for procedures other than the most commonly performed, as cost changes depending on the pet's weight, physical condition, and individual needs. We will gladly make an estimate for you if you pet ever needs one of these procedures. Listed below are the descriptions of many of the surgeries we offer, and their prices.

**Before we wil schedule your pet for surgery, we do require that they have been seen at our facility within the past 3 months.

CAT SPAY (OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY)
Spaying your cat is an important part of basic health care. Spaying at a young age helps to prevent mammary cancer and uterine infections. Spaying at any age prevents unwanted kittens, noisy heat cycles, and possibly even urine marking in the house. Spaying can be done safely at 12 weeks of age and over and the recovery period usually lasts around a week (depending on your pet's age.) Your cat will be closely monitored while under anesthesia, carefully watching her breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature. Our spay patients are checked-in in the morning and stay throughout the day to monitor their progress after surgery. Your cat will be able to go home later in the afternoon on the day of surgery.

Price of the Cat Spay Includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia
• Complimentary Nail Trimming

• Surgical Packs and Supplies
• The Spay
• Hospitalization for the day

• Post-Operative Pain Medications

**Additional costs may apply if your pet is in heat, pregnant, has cystic ovaries, or an infected uterus.

CAT NEUTER (CASTRATION)
Neutering your cat friend is one of the most important aspects of his health care that you can do for him. The most beneficial reasons to neuter him include reducing the incidence of objectionable behaviors. By neutering your cat you will reduce his liklihood of roaming by almost 90%, likelihood of fighting by almost 90%, and reduce the risks of urine marking by almost 90%. If you have him neutered as a kitten the likelihood of preventing these behaviors before they even start is almost 100%!
While under anesthesia your friend will be closely monitored, carefully watching his breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature. Our neuter patients are checked-in in the morning and are able to go home later in the evening, just as soon as we have made sure they are fully awake.

Price of the Cat Neuter Includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia
• Complimentary Nail Trimming
• Surgical Packs and Supplies
• The Neuter
• Hospitalization for the day
• Post-Operative Pain Medication

DOG SPAY (OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY)
Spaying your pet is one of the most significant aspects of female dog health care an owner can provide. The benefits to the dog far outweigh simply not having puppies. A dog spayed before her first heat cycle will have a near zero chance of developing mammary cancer. After the first hear cycle, this incidence climbs to 7% and after the second heat the risk is 25%, that's 1 in 4!

Another important reason to spay your dog is Pyometra. Pyometra is a life threatening infection of the uterus which generally occurs in middle-aged to older female dogs. Pyometra causes the uterus to swell dramatically and fill with pus, bacteria, and toxins and emergency spaying is crucial at this point. It is easy to see that an early spay can prevent these difficult and often times fatal health conditions.

Your friend will be closely monitored while under anesthesia, carefully watching her breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature. Our spay patients are checked-in in the morning and will stay throughout the day to monitor their progress after surgery. Your dog will be able to go home later in the afternoon on the day of surgery.

Price of the Dog Spay includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia

• The Spay
• Hospitalization for the day
• Post-Operative Pain Medications

**Additional costs may apply if your pet is in heat, pregnant, has cystic ovaries, or an infected uterus.

DOG NEUTER (CASTRATION)
Having your dog neutered is one of the most important aspects of his health care. Not only will it help to prevent prostate problems later in life, but it will affect his behavior in a positive way. His interest in roaming will decrease by roughly 90%, aggressive behavior against other dogs is eliminated in 60% of dogs, urine marking is eliminated in 50% of dogs, and inappropriate mounting is eliminated in 70% of dogs. These numbers are almost 100% if your friend is neutered as a puppy!

Neutering can be safely done at 12 weeks of age or over and the recovery period usually lasts about a week (depending on your dog's age). Your friend will be closely monitored while under anesthesia, carefully watching his breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature. Our neuter patients are checked-in in the morning and will stay throughout the day to monitor their progress after surgery. Your dog will be able to go home later in the afternoon on the day of surgery.

Price of the Dog Neuter Includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia
• Complimentary Nail Trimming
• Surgical Packs and Supplies
• The Neuter
• Hospitalization for the day

• Post-Operative Pain Medications

FELINE DECLAWING
Having your cat declawed can be a valuable option if they scratch furniture, curtains, screens, or even your skin. At Flushing Animal Hospital, we use the surgical scalpel method, a method that does not cause crushing or bruising as other methods can. With this method, the third digit of the toe is removed and the ligaments carefully dissected between the bone to ensure as little pain and discomfort as possible! Declawing can be done safely as early as 8 weeks of age. It can also be done at the same time as your cat's spay or neuter, if you'd like. The smaller your cat, the easier the procedure is on them. If your cat is over 8 or 9 pounds, we may suggest taking home pain medication so that they are more comfortable afterwards. During anesthesia your cat will be closely monitored, carefully watching their breathing rate, heart rate, and temperature. Our declaw patients are checked-in in the morning and always stay overnight in the hospital to ensure that there are no problems, that they are comfortable, eating and drinking, and have rested as the first 24 hours after surgery are crucial to the healing process. Your cat will be able to go home the next afternoon.

Price of the Declaw Includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia
• Complimentary Nail Trimming (On rear feet if only having front declaw)
• Surgical Packs and Supplies
• The Declaw
• Overnight Hospitalization

• Post-Operative Pain Medications

DENTAL CLEANING

Did you know that any type of dental disease takes a toll on the heart, kidneys, and other organs? Bacteria from the mouth floats around in the blood vessels and enters vital organs. This bacteria will cause early heart and kidney disease if not treated. Teeth cleaning can be done at any age, even our senior friends. At Flushing Animal Hospital we will provide a full teeth cleaning for your pet. Your pet's teeth will be scaled with an ultrasonic scaler, polished to help prevent plaque from forming, and finally, flouride will be applied to strengthen the enamel. If needed, we are able to extract severely diseased teeth. Your pet will be closely monitored while under anesthesia, carefully watching their breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature. Our teeth cleaning patients are checked in in the morning and are able to go home later that evening, just as soon as we have made sure they are fully awake.

Price of the Dental Includes:

• Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
• Nursing Care and Monitoring
• Pre-Anesthetic Injections and General Anesthesia
• Complimentary Nail Trimming (On rear feet if only having front declaw)
• Surgical Packs and Supplies
• The Dental

• Estimate range based on possible extractions**

• Post-Operative Pain Medications

** Please note that not all dental cleanings are priced the same and can range in cost. This is due to all animals having different grades of dental disease. In order to recieve an estimte of charges would be to bring your pet in for an exam to be evaluated prior to surgery.

We also offer a specific diet plan to help prevent dental disease.

We do not offer services such as ear cropping
